Bedtime: Dilly Dallying around
I am not sure if I can capture this story on the written page/screen. But I need to write it down for my memory. Such a fun story to experience in person, and hopefully, also to tell. Perhaps even to read, thought I think it loses something when removed from the immediacy of the story telling.
Sadly, it will be missing the visuals of Gov's facial reactions, physical movements and urgent story corrections and additions. The most he's been involved in a bedtime story for a while. Lately, he's been content to start it off with the required characters (5 Spectacular Spidermen chasing Sandman), and gives very little input.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, I refer you to this epic post for background.
Rutabaga is still the 2nd funniest word he knows1. But I discovered the 3rd funniest word this past week when I invented a new character. Some day last week, Gov was taking forever to move through the slow process of getting to bed, so that night, we started a story with a new character named Dilly Dally. Hard to believe, but that seemed to be the first time he's heard that expression, and giggles ensued. Anyway, no superheroes in that one, just Captain Rutabaga and Dilly Dally playing in the sandbox.
You may remember the Captain...
Back to tonight's story.
pause
So, Dilly Dally (smile) and Captain Rutabaga are playing on the beach. Building sandcastles, digging holes, splashing around in the water.
And then Dilly Dally heard a lot of splashing behind her, and she and Captain Rutabaga turned and saw Sandman running fast through the water. So fast, that the Captain and Dilly Dally could not get out of the way fast enough, and a big wave of water knocked them over and they got soaked.
After they went by, Captain Rutabaga looked at Dilly Dally and asked "The Spidermen are trying to catch Sandman, do you think we should help?"
Time to wrap up the story and reach the end...
Hmmm. OK, I guess I will add another act to the play, and mix it up a bit.
Night Night.
1 While rutabaga is the 2nd funniest word, it is still a ridiculously far distance away from the first place champion word, "butt". Seriously, it is crazy how funny that word is to the wee man.

Back to tonight's story.
Me: This is a story about ... Captain Rutabaga and his friend Dilly Dally.
Gov (eye's as big as can be, with a huge grin on his face): Ya! Ya! Tell that story. Captain Rutabaga and Dih-lee-Dahl-lee.
pause
Gov: And 5 Spectacular Spidermen were there... chasing Sandman
Me: ugh. ok.
Aside: Can you get soaked if you are already playing in the water? After Dilly Dally and Captain Rutabaga got back up they heard more splashes like people running through the water, and they saw 5 Spectacular Spidermen charging through as fast as they could to try and catch Sandman.
After they went by, Captain Rutabaga looked at Dilly Dally and asked "The Spidermen are trying to catch Sandman, do you think we should help?"
Gov: Ya, but Dilly Dally doesn't have any powers. So, off charge the Captain and Dilly Dally after the Spectacular Spidermen who were, themselves, chasing Sandman. They all ran up the beach in succession, then over a hill, and then,
Me: Well, she doesn't have any super powers, but she can use her brain, and help them figure out stuff that way
Gov: Ya. But Sandman is very fast, they can't catch him. Capn Rutabaga doesn't have any rutabagas to throw, and the Spectacular Spidermen don't have any webs, and Dilly Dally doesn't have superpowers
Me: No, but she has her brain
Gov: She can't use her brain.
Me: Ah, OK. But they can all still chase after him
Gov: Ya. They can still run!
Time to wrap up the story and reach the end...
Me: And then the Spidermen shot their webs and wrapped up Sand-
Gov: No! The Spectacular Spidermen don't have their webs, and Capn Rutabaga doesn't have rutabagas. And.. And.. Dilly Dally ... can't use her brain.
Hmmm. OK, I guess I will add another act to the play, and mix it up a bit.
Me: And then Sandman stopped and got on ...And that was it - an acceptable ending, and he rolled on his side to go to sleep.
Gov: A tunnel-wolf
Me: A what?
Gov: A tunnel-wolf. He got on a tunnel-wolf and he goes very very FAST!
Me: A tunnel-wolf?!
Gov: Ya, a tunnel-wolf... and ... and he goes FAST!
Me: Ah, ok, Sandman got on a tunnel-wolf, and sped off but then Sandman fell off the tunnel wolf, and the Spidermen and Captain Rutabaga and Dilly Dally caught up to him and caught him!... And that's the end of the story.
Gov: (Waving hands wildly about) Noooooo! Sandman doesn't fall. He gets on a tunnel-wolf and goes fast and fast and fast!!
Me: OK then he goes very fast (time to wrap it up) ... so fast that no one can catch him because the Spidermen don't have their webs, and Captain Rutabaga is out of rutabagas, and Dillly Dally can't use her brain... and that's the end of the story.
Night Night.
