The Quake

You may have heard of the earthquake in Yogyakarta ("Johg-jah-karta"). It's not close to us, and we didn't feel it (not like the one here last week that cleared the office). The one in Yogya seems pretty bad - over 3,000 dead now.

A few staff have gone home to look on family members, but we haven't heard of anyone being injured yet. The programme manager for our programme was actually in Yogya for the weekend, but was safe & sound.

Yogya is known for cheap batik & good shopping, the largest Buddhist monument in the world (Borobodur) and the largest Hindu compound in Indonesia (Prambanan). There are tonnes of schools and universities, and it used to be known as a great learning city, though it seems people talk about it's drug problems now... but that's just normal evolution from all the universities, no?

Indonesia's having a rough time of it lately...Mt. Merapi volcano is also still threatening to blow...
