Diction
So, if we could be bothered to count, we suppose Govan can say 50 words or more, depending on the context. Not all of those can be understood, even some of the ones we know he's saying.
We blame the beer.
He needs to cut back on that, but I guess it depends on Kelly.
A recent conversation in the truck on the way back from day care...
Govan: Baaalll
Dan: You want a ball? Maybe when we get home
Govan: No (pause) Baaalll!!
Dan: Oh you want your bottle? Here you go.
Govan: No (pushes bottle away, as truck veers a bit from a behind-the-back-bottle-offering manoeuvre but stays in lane)
Govan: BAAALLL (more plaintively)
Dan: Looks out window...ohhhh Balloon. Ya, a balloon.
Govan: Ya.
Dan: What colour is the balloon?
Govan: Blue **
pause
Govan: More? More Baaallll (balloon)
Dan: Ummm...maybe, keep looking...
He likes playing the more game. A car drives by.. "Kah!"... Yes, a car... "More Kah? More Kah?"... depends on the traffic patterns around here, little man, but maybe...if you're patient...
To be fair, Ball, Balloon and Bottle sound very very similar as spoken by "Pak Teuku". He seems to have a British flair as Bottle is pronounced without the t's.
All understandable and part of the process of learning to speak.
Slightly more confusing is the other word that sounds curiously like "Ball"
Need to work on that one.
We also have to work on colours and numbers... The answer to "what colour is x?" is always blue,
and the answer to "how many x are there?"...two! Sometimes he'll go for "Three!".
Oddly, never just 'one' even when everyone knows... there can be only one...
** The balloons were indeed blue, but that had no bearing on his answer :)
